On the Mark 5/9/12

The Spring sports are over at Opelika High School and Opelika Middle School.

The last 3 sports at OHS, Girls golf team, Softball team and boys and girls track ended their season this week.

The girls Golf team finished Monday with a fourth place finish in the Sub-State tournament at Moores Mill Club. This was the first trip for the girl’s golf team in years.

The OHS Softball team ended their season last weekend, losing to rival Auburn in the semi-finals of the Area Tournament.

The lady bulldogs defeated Auburn in the first round and were beaten by Central and AHS to finish 3rd.

The girls had to place in the top two to advance to the state playoffs.

Coach Stephanie Brown's team had an up and down season. The team was forced to play through several injuries to some key players including ace pitcher Kelsey Pelham.

The Dawgs will have to depend on several young pitchers next year because the top 2 pitchers graduate.

The Girls and Boys Track team both qualified for the state meet in Gulf Shores last weekend. Both teams finished in the top 10 in the 6A State Meet.

The girls finished 4th behind top individual scores from Emma Garner, Anissa Lewis and Jakayla Hand.

Garner finished 2nd in the 800 meter run and 4th in the 1600 meter run  while the 4x100 relay team of Kala Sp inks, Anissa Lewis, Britney Johnson, Jakayla Hand and Breonna Lock hart placed 4th .

Annissa Lewis won her second consecutive 100 meter dash and finished 3rd in the 200 meters.

Jakayla Hand finished 3rd in the triple jump and 4th in the long jump.

The boys finished 8th with top scores from Tony Philpot, Cortez Vaughn and Cordaryl Whitehead.

Philpot placed 2nd in the shot put and discus. Cortez Vaughn finished 4th in the 110 hurdles while Whitehead placed 4th in the 3200 meter run.
